Arne Espeel, a 25-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, tragically died on Saturday after fainting on the field just after saving a penalty for an amateur club.
Espeel stopped the penalty attempt, but he then collapsed to the ground, according to Reuters and Belgian media. He was given immediate defibrillator assistance by emergency personnel, however he passed away soon after being admitted to the hospital.
More than 1,000 people reportedly showed up to honor the deceased player, according to sources.
“Everyone is shocked and in a state of calamity. Arne was adored by everyone and had spent his whole life with the club. He was a really sensitive young man who is always happy and willing to assist. This is a significant blow. First and foremost, for his family and our whole club,” said Patrick Rotsaert, Winkel's sports director.
Winkel Sport B, a team from West Brabant's second provincial league in Belgium, had a 2-1 lead against Westrozebeke at the time of their opponent's second-half penalty.
“Arne Espeel's tragic passing has left Winkel Sport in tremendous sorrow. We extend our sincere sympathies to Arne's family and friends during this difficult time. In a statement, the club claimed that football was an afterthought.
