A Polish court finds an activist guilty of providing abortion pills

Justyna Wydrzynska, a Warsaw-based advocate for women’s rights, was found guilty on Tuesday of assisting a domestic abuse victim in obtaining abortion medication.

Wydrzynska received an eight-month community service term.

Some of Europe’s strictest abortion laws are found in Poland. Poland’s constitutional court invalidated a measure allowing abortions for babies with congenital abnormalities in 2020.

The Abortion Dream Team’s co-founder is Wydrzynska. The group offers information to women interested in getting abortions.

What accusations are made against Wydrzynska?

The activist was accused by the prosecution of “helping with an abortion,” a felony that carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail. In Poland, it is acceptable to self-administer abortion drugs, but not to help another person.

The activist said she will challenge the judgement.

According to the Polish magazine Polityka, the Warsaw court denied access to several media representatives due to “lack of room” for the attendees.

In its closing arguments, the prosecution emphasised the “great societal damage” brought on by ending “life in the perinatal period,” according to Polityka.

According to Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Wydrzynska’s defence sought that the group be removed from the proceedings.

What was said by the defence on the case?

After the decision, Wydrzynska reportedly exclaimed, “This state is guilty,” according to Polityka. She said, “It has failed me, and millions of women in this nation.”

“Her tale struck me since I had gone through something similar. I felt compelled to assist her “Added she.

According to defence attorney Anna Bergiel, the case “established a precedent.” She said that the lady who took the pill to end the pregnancy did so “for her own welfare and for the benefit of her children.”

She understood that having a second kid would make it much harder to break the pattern of domestic abuse, Bergiel said.

“We have abortions and we’re going to keep having them,” said Kinga Jelinska of the Abortion Dream Team to Gazeta Wyborcza.
