After scoring twice in the second half to defeat Arsenal 3-1 on Wednesday, Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland gave Manchester City a boost in the Premier League championship battle.
Only a few weeks ago, City was eight points behind Arsenal in the rankings. Now, the reigning champions have increased their lead over the Gunners and shown that they won't give up the crown easy.
Despite the fact that Arsenal still has a game in hand, the victory puts City in first position ahead of the Gunners on goal differential. Maybe more significantly, given that City has now defeated Arsenal in 11 consecutive league games, it maintained a psychological advantage over its championship opponent.
We can all agree that (Arsenal) has been the greatest team this season, so travelling to face them is difficult, according to Haaland. But, we turned in an outstanding performance and secured three crucial points, putting us back in the race.
In a battle that lived up to its hype as the greatest Premier League encounter of the season so far with periods of end-to-end action, City grabbed the lead when Kevin de Bruyne took advantage of a defensive blunder in the 24th minute, before Bukayo Saka tied the score from the penalty spot in the 42nd.
Arsenal got off to a strong start, but when City goalkeeper Ederson sent the ball up the field, they carelessly surrendered the lead. Takehiro Tomiyasu, the right defender, attempted to throw the ball back to Aaron Ramsdale, but only managed to send it into De Bruyne's path, who looped a lob over the advancing goalie and into the open goal.
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, remarked, “I haven't seen Tomiyasu make that pass back in seven years, but he accomplished it tonight.”
Eddie Nketiah had missed the finest opportunity of the match only moments earlier when Oleksandr Zinchenko found him in the area with a cross, but the striker headed wide.
But, Arsenal persisted in pressing the opposition, and the pressure paid off when it was given a penalty for an Ederson foul on Eddie Nketiah as the striker attempted to fire from an awkward angle. Saka sent Ederson the other way and calmly rolled the penalty shot into the left corner.
After the interval, City improved and felt it had a penalty when Gabriel clumsily brought down Haaland in the area, but the call was overruled for the Norwegian striker's offside.
After another error by Gabriel, who handed the ball over in his own half, City nevertheless regained the advantage. The visitors soon responded, as Ilkay Gundogan crossed the ball for Grealish, who deflected Tomiyasu's attempt and beat Ramsdale with a low strike.
Haaland increased his total to 26 league goals this season when De Bruyne cut the ball back for the striker, who took one touch before firing a shot into the far corner. Haaland was able to start despite suffering an injury in the last match against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The closest Arsenal got to regaining a lead was when Nketiah missed with another header late in the game.
“They much outperformed us in the first half. We were far better in the second half, according to City manager Pep Guardiola. Since they were so outstanding, we declared at halfway that we were just defending and not playing; nonetheless, the second half was fantastic.
After registering 16 victories during the first 19 rounds of the season, Arsenal has already lost two of its last three league games without a victory. In those three games, the Gunners have let up eight more points than they did in the first 19. (7).
The loss, according to Arteta, was mostly self-inflicted.
There was a fantastic struggle between the two sides, and Arteta commented, “Against this team, they're going to crush you. We simply gave them the goals, totally gave them the goals.” On the other side, despite having three excellent opportunities to score, we failed to do so. That was the distinction.
Due to a rearranging of schedules after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the game that was initially set for October was postponed.
